New Summer Season at The Lights
If you haven’t visited
Andover’s new theatre The Lights yet, this
season may well be the one to tempt you through the
doors. With over 30 fabulous shows including comedy,
music, dance, theatre, acoustic sets and special interest
lectures Director Heather Whittam is out to get your
attention!
Featured on the front cover of the new
brochure and appearing on Saturday 31 May, the comic force Lenny
Henry leads the succession of well know names lined up to entertain
in Andover. Other featured comedians include Rob
Derring and award winning Brendon Burns.
Mountaineer Simon Yates, first became known as
the man who cut the rope holding his friend and climbing partner
during a descent from Peru’s Siula Grande in 1985. The
resulting film “Touching the Void” immortalised his
story. Simon visits on 23 April to recount his
extraordinary journeys to some of the most treacherous peaks in the
world under the title of “Beyond the Void”. Back
with our feet on the ground, Radio 2’s Johnnie Walker will be
telling his fascinating story of 40 years in broadcasting from
pirate DJ to his life at the BBC.
Music lovers will enjoy the unique piano duet
Katzenjammer, where crazy piano gymnastics are projected onto a
large screen to catch every moment of the tangled hands and arms as
they play Tom and Jerry inspired arrangements to
Tchaikovsky. In contrast the decidedly chilled
Martin Simpson, widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic
and slide guitar players in the world, appears on 24
April. Martin is a regular nominee in the BBC Folk
Awards and winner of Musician of the Year in both 2002 and
2005.
Other shows that promise a great night out
include The Cavern Beatles, Sing-a-long-a Joseph, T-Rextasy, The
No.1 70s Show, not forgetting return visits by the fabulous Ga Ga
Queen tribute band and Pluck- The Specialist.
Proteus Theatre Company return to The
Lights in May with a new show entitled Below Zero, the story
of Marta and Michael, with the topical theme of the current
obsession with beauty, celebrity and body image.
The wonderfully named “Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf” will take you
on a trip through time – charting the rise and fall, and rise
again, of a television legend!
As it’s the Summer Season you’ll also find
some great children’s workshops including drama workshops The Magic
Key and Alice in Wonderland and a week long drama extravaganza of
Grease and the songs we all love to sing. Body
Casting, DJ workshops and Dance Off sessions are also offered.
