JUNE 2007 press releases

Summer Sounds back in Vigo Park

With outdoor events peaking in the summer months Andover will feature in regional event listings with the Summer Sounds event planned for Sunday 1 July in Vigo Road Park.

This free event is on course to be a fantastic Music and Arts Festival offering 3 distinct areas of the programme including live music, a series of walkabout acts and a dedicated arts workshop village where visitor can get creative.

The fun will run from 12 noon to 9pm and be set out throughout the park with a main stage, marquee area for the arts workshop village and a variety of international food outlets still leaving plenty of space for visitors to spread their blankets and enjoy an afternoon being entertained in the park. Organised under the umbrella of the Andover Live committee this event is sponsored by Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire County Council, Propaganda, Waitrose, and the Andover Vision.

Live music on the main stage will be provided by the Black Eagles, and something completely new for Andover, Matzos a Kletzmer Band. Ska fans will enjoy Orange Street who will be covering hits by Madness, Bad Manners and The Specials including, A Message to you Rudy and Too Much Too Young. Festival favourites The Baghdaddies should get everyone up off the grass and onto their feet as they play an eclectic fusion of rhythms and melodies plucked from around the world. They play Balkan gypsy with Middle Eastern flavours, shades of klezmer and tango, jazz and reggae plus a touch of ska - all laced with funky dance grooves and blistering eastern brass harmonies.

The arts village workshop will feature areas where you can have a go at making a carnival mask, a puppet, some bling jewellery, or maybe join in the clay workshop where you make a model of yourself at the festival!

Walkabout acts will keep the crowds entertained, Kisstherapy, a mobile Kisspensary booth where Dolly offers visitors the opportunity to choose from a menu of kisses including the sweet kiss, the good luck kiss, the tattoo kiss – silly and charming, spreading a little happiness. The Flying Buttresses with their stunning special effects and believable characterisations feature enchanting, interactive puppetry walkabout.

Organisers have been keen to involve local children in this project. Balksbury Junior School will complete a special workshop day with Big Beat Junk Percussion, where using recycled materials they design and produce musical percussion instruments. This workshop will culminate in a live orchestra performance on the main stage using instruments made from items such as gas pipes, plastic barrels, dustbins, shopping trolleys, metal bins – junk funk at its best. Toozalli Community Arts project have also been contracted to work with both Anton Junior School and Andover C of E to create a major art installation which will be installed in the park for visitors to view.

Get Creative at The Lights

A full range of creative workshops will be operating through July and August at The Lights as part of its ongoing education programme. Director Heather Whittam has programmed some interesting and thought provoking activities for children aged 4 to 16 years.

A production of the ever popular Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat following a whole week of learning the songs, routines and general drama skills in preparation for a Friday evening performance. This is great fun where young people aged 8 to 12 years old can learn new skills and gain confidence while making new friends.

Eager 8 is a one day activity where children aged 5 to 7 years design and make the props that they then use in a production, featuring a grumpy Uncle Sebastian, at the end of the day. Mrs Smith’s Magic Toy Shop is the setting for another drama based activity where this age group can really let their imaginations go.

A DJ Workshop for ages 13 to 16 year old will introduce mixing tracks and creating individual sounds on the decks with DJ Matt from Handson Records. Magical Puppet Making will be a unique puppet making experience that will stretch the creative skills of 5 to 7 year olds and also 8 to 11 year olds.

Animation Station will present two one day specialist workshops for budding animators on Tuesday 21 August and Wednesday 22 August. The Claymation session will teach basic animation skills using clay for modelling and scripting stories to film. While Animation with Collage will develop ideas, characterisation and final piece films to share with friends.

Places for these workshops are limited and can be booked through the Box Office on 01264 368368.
